Founded in the course of the reunification of East and West Germany in 1989, its aim was to foster a closer relationship between medical faculties in Europe and the rest of the world. Therefore, the ESC was initiated as a conference between the two medical faculties of the former eastern „Humboldt-Universtität“ and the western „Freie Universität“. Especially the scientific exchange was planned in those times of big political changes.
Previous Conferences: Since 1989, the ESC had different topics every year and therefore always a special character. As an impression, some topics and examples of keynote speakers of the previous five years are listed below.
27th ESC 2016: Facing Antimicrobial Resistance – Research Revolution wanted! The topic of this year´s conference is “Facing Antimicrobial Resistance – Research Revolution wanted!”. The development of antibiotics marked a turning point in the history of healing – finally doctors had a tool that could completely cure patients of deadly infectious diseases. However, nowadays, this vital tool is at risk of blunting due to widespread misuse and increasing resistance.

26th ESC 2015 : Science or Fiction? – Imagine the future of medicine. The topic of this year´s conference is “Science or Fiction? – Imagine the future of medicine”. What seemed science fiction a few years ago is now being translated into clinical routine: Together with outstanding experts in the field we want to think outside the box and investigate new perspectives in modern medicine. How can we, future doctors and scientists, meet the promises and perils of the coming medical revolution? What is our role as young professionals in the exciting era of evolving technologies and personalized medicine? Which responsibilities and challenges is each one of us facing?

24th ESC 2013: Consciousness and the Senses – How Do We Perceive the World?” text=”This topic aimed to explore the delicate line between consciousness and unconsciousness, perception and reality, man and machine, memory and imagination, genius and madness, and physiological ageing and neurogenerative illness. The program comprised of contributions of various medical disciplines, such as neurosciences, psychiatry, biotechnology, space medicine, public health etc. and of course related ethical issues were discussed in a panel discussion. We believe that a patient’s mind, perceptions and cognition are very important in every aspect of clinical work.
